Marcus Myers | Bucks County, PA

Marcus Myers embodies all things College H.U.N.K.S. ...and then some! His dedication to the brand, drive for success, willingness to do whatever it takes, leadership abilities and his creativity when training and mentoring all come together to form one incredible College Hunk! Our staff and clients often rave about Marcus. He's humble, kind and oh so talented. As Amanda, our Office Admin, likes to say "Everyone loves Marcus. How could you not?"

Marcus joined our team in March 2019. His initial goal was to work for us while waiting to get into the Philadelphia police academy to become an officer. Early in 2021, he pivoted and made the decision to stay with HUNKS long term. He believes in our business and the opportunities it can provide him to continue to grow and develop personally and professionally. We couldn't be more thrilled!

Marcus started as a Wingman on the truck, learned both the junk and move sides of our business and quickly rose to Captain. He's led many junk and move teams and can handle any challenging situation thrown at him. From there, he was trained as an Estimator and wows potential clients with his thoroughness and professionalism. He has currently assumed the role of Lead Trainer & Sales Manager for our location. He conducts junk and move new hire training in our warehouse and in the field. He's naturally skilled at connecting with new hires and they immediately bond with Marcus.

One of Marcus' greatest strengths is his creativity and he can carry a tune! Marcus surprised us during an all staff meeting with his rendition of "I'll Make a HUNK Out of You", a reworked song from Disney's Mulan. It was fantastic! He's created and performed several other motivational HUNKtunes. We shared his initial tune with home office and Nick was so impressed that he personally reached out to Marcus. Marcus was recently asked to lead a huddle at reunion this year. We can't wait to see what he comes up with!

For these and many reasons, we feel that Marcus is deserving of Hunk of the Year 2021!

Jack Long | Boston South, MA

Jack has been employed with College Hunks since even before I began here with the company. He began his career here as a wingman for both sides of our business. He quickly cemented himself on the Junk side as an integral wingman for all of the captains he worked with. Jack quickly developed a desire to become a Junk Captain for our location. However, due to his driving history, he was not eligible to be placed on our locations auto insurance policy. This was a demoralizing situation for Jack because he was given the opportunity to sell as a captain whenever we placed him with our brand new drivers that were training to be captains. The captains would learn how to sell from Jack while gaining their own driving experience. Jack never gave up on being a model teammate for these new captains that were placed with him to learn how to be a captain, even though he was unable to truly be a captain himself.

Our location ended up switching auto policies at the beginning of 2021. We ran Jack’s information through our new insurance and to our management teams surprise he was able to be added to the insurance. We kept this a secret from Jack until his official driver training with me. Jack spent almost 1.5 years as a wingman with at least 1 year of that time having the capacity, desire, and capability to be a captain.

Jack was my personal wingman during the beginning of my career here. I was placed with Jack when I was ready to be a captain and I completed my driver training. Jack showed me the ropes when it came to “selling junk”. I firmly believe that I would not be where I am today with this company if it were not for Jack. Words cannot express how proud I am of Jack and how far he has come with us. He is now our Metal Manager for our location. His growth from wingman to now Metal Manager has been beautiful to watch unfold! We love you Jack!

Ben Berkobien | Macomb County, MI

I met Ben on the eve of my franchise training. I interviewed him knowing he was coming from a competitor and asked why he was looking elsewhere. His response was the other company didn't seem to want to let Ben form the type of team he envisioned. I don't even think Ben knew at the time how the College Hunks way and culture were exactly what he wanted to dedicate his efforts to. Hired and leaving my office at 6:00 pm on a Sunday evening, and knowing I had set a goal to have an Operations Manager on staff to attend the franchise training with me, Ben volunteered and was sitting at a desk across from me at 7:00 am the next morning. I quickly was learning the dedication Ben would have to his job. Today I have witnessed 16 months of him leading by example, and truly building leaders one by one, carrying out my most cherished of our four core values. In Ben's first four months, he scheduled crews, orientated and trained every new employee, and worked on the truck for nearly every large move. He did it with an attitude that taught the guys you could accomplish a tough job while being in a fun, enthusiastic, TEAM, environment. He did it in a way that resulted in nothing but positive reviews, making it easy for me to show the Hunks in the morning huddles the rewarding results we could get if we listen, fulfill, delight, and consequently wow the customers. The results are better than expected, with revenues that should end up near $1.4 million in our first full year, a solid and growing crew, and the advancement of one of his Hunks coming off the truck to be the next operations manager, two of his HUNKS coming off the trucks to be full time Sales Consultants, and many great captains. This leaves my franchise only one option, which is to grow and accommodate these leaders and relegate Ben to become a great general manager I'm sure he'll become.

Phillip Thompson | Atlanta East, GA

Phil is a father of four active children and a loving husband.  He was looking for a job to make ends meet financially and was hired in May of 2019.

We started him as a wingman, set him up to learn all aspects of our organization.  He immediately began absorbing and executing his duties above and beyond. He showed great promise in his natural ability as a leader, embracing his role, while being a person younger team members looked up to.

When we implemented a new accessories sales program. Phil immediately took charge of his accessory sales and quickly led all teams in non-labor up-sales.  He independently worked with the other team captains, demonstrating his successful techniques. Since then, our non-labor moves sales have increased and averaged around 15% of total move revenue! His efforts and other captains following his lead, contributed to our phenomenal COGS, currently hovering at 44% of total revenue.

This summer, at the height of move season, Phil was promoted to our move consultant position. Phil took charge of this role and enabled us to sustain a record growth summer season.  He currently is booking move jobs at an above-average of 70% booking rate.

Presently, Phil has taken on operation duties, leading morning huddles, all staff meetings, as well as planning company outings for the rest of the team. He attended and totally embraced the “Building Leaders Summit”, he immediately delivered a comprehensive program summary and brought new ideas to implement during our leadership meetings.

Phil also volunteers and enjoys giving back to the community, he engaged so much in this effort that he took the initiative to deliver food to families in need through a non-profit organization. His focus was on getting groceries to elderly people during difficult times due to Covid-19. Phil embraces our vision to “Move the World”.

Phil lives and breathes our four core values, in and out of work.  As Daniel, one of the owner's states often, “Phil is a rare being, one in a million”, whom we are fortunate to have captured and groomed at our College Hunks Home.”

Steven Boyne and Robert Gordon “Gordy” | Wilmington, NC

During an on-site visit to the Raleigh, NC location prior to opening in June of 2018, I was assigned to follow a move crew which consisted of Gordy and Steven.  At the end of the day when I was ready to leave,   Steven Boyne asked for a few minutes - Gordy and I are interested in coming to Wilmington to help you build your business, he said.  "I'm not allowed to recruit or hire HUNKS from existing locations and I'm not sure your leadership in Raleigh would appreciate me doing that, I replied.  Not to worry Steven said, Building Leaders is what we do at College HUNKS and Raleigh is aware we want to do this, that's why you are with Gordy and I.  I confirmed the information with Jeremy Harper and the rest is history.  I hired Steven and Gordy who now serve in the roles of General Manager and Operations Manager.   Early on, it was late nights on trucks, hiring, training, estimating - you name it, we worked together to get it done.  Steven and Gordy are an inseparable and integral part of our business success in Wilmington, NC.  Their individual skills and talents complement each other - that is why they are deserving of this award as a Hunk of the Year team.  We still own several first-year benchmarks for the brand which include $1M in sales in the first 12 Months.  Wilmington is currently the highest grossing single zone in the system topping $1.7M in 2020 and will go over $2.2M in sales in 2021.  In the 3.5 years of operation since opening, Steven and Gordy spear headed a no claims safety record for vehicle safety, and over 840 Google Reviews with a 4.9 rating.  Finally, when you review Presidential Metrics, Steven and Gordy keep us within brand benchmarks monthly.  On top of all of this, we have trained/on-boarded many new locations - these franchise partners will tell you that Steven and Gordy answer their phone calls and emails with detailed assistance with no hesitation.   The success we have seen in Wilmington has been driven by Steven & Gordy - they are deserving of this recognition not only for their work in 2021, but for their collective team-work, setting of the HUNK Standard, and brand dedication over their near five-year relationship with the College HUNKS brand!!
